Introducing the Outdoor Adventure Skill - Aquatics

Groups from around Kennedy Region attended the OAS Aquatics swimming carnival recently at Long Tan Pool to celebrate our Founder's Birthday with a splash.  It was our first Region event for 2025 and was well attended with around 150 participants and was a great chance for scouts to catch up with each other and have some fun.

Throughout the afternoon, youth participated in a range of activities that enabled them to develop their water survival skills in the Stages of the Outdoor Adventure Skill of Aquatics.

The Outdoor Adventure Skills are a key feature of the Scout Program.  The Outdoor Adventure Skills framework promotes youth members’ exploration of, and progression through key outdoor pursuits. Designed for all ages and abilities, the Outdoor Adventure Skills reinforce what Scouting is well known for, and compliment other personal progression opportunities provided by Scouting.

Outdoor Adventure Skills (OAS) in Aquatics  is all about building confidence, safety awareness, and proficiency in water-based activities. Scouts progress through different stages as they develop their skills in the various streams of lifesaving, rescue, snorkelling, scuba and surfing .

Key Areas of Aquatics OAS:

  1. Swimming Proficiency – Learning basic strokes, improving endurance, and understanding water safety.
  2. Lifesaving & Rescue Skills – Towing, reaching assists, and emergency response.
  3. Surfing - Surfing techniques, reading surf conditions, and practicing safe rescues.
  4. Diving & Snorkelling – Exploring underwater environments and practicing breath control.

Safety Focus:

  • Buddy System: Always having a partner.
  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs): Proper fitting and use.
  • Weather Awareness: Checking conditions before heading out.
  • Emergency Procedures: What to do in case of capsizing, strong currents, or injuries.

Aquatics skills are not only fun but also essential for outdoor adventures.
