How much adventure can a Scout have?

How much adventure can a Scout have?

The year begins with a spark of excitement as Scouts gather after the holidays, sharing stories and setting goals. Our Groups follow the Queensland School terms for their weekly meetings but opportunties exist for holiday activities as well where scheduled.

Throughout the year, there’s laughter, challenge, growth, and friendship. Scouts learn to cook over an open flame, navigate with a compass, lead their peers, and give back to their community. It’s a rhythm of adventure and responsibility, and by the end of the year, each Scout stands a little taller—more confident, capable, and connected.

Throughout the year a Scout in the Region might have the opportunity to participate in:

  • Sailing, archery, abseiling or indoor rock climbing
  • Campouts, complete with tents, campfires, and stories that echo through the trees. They might even brave the cold for a winter camp (the nights do get cool in Nth Qld during winter), sipping hot cocoa by a fire under the stars.
  • Basic Water Rescue skills
  • Paddling along the river in canoes and kayaks
  • Bushwalking along great trails
  • Orienteering, navigation with GPS as well as geochaching
  • Map reading and compass skills
  • Construction and knot tying in awesome pioneering challenges
  • Learning first aid skills
  • Open fire cooking, camp stove cooking and simple no bake cooking
  • Learning about conservation e.g " Leave no Trace principles" and the environment
  • Learning about the Sustainable Development Goals and helping the planet.
  • Learning survival skills and bush skills eg water- filtration experiments, solar oven building, weather tracking.
  • Tool use and maintenance
  • Fire lighting and fire safety
  • Learning about science and tackling obstacle courses
  • Developing creative masterpieces through arts and crafts
  • Singing, drama or skits at campfires
  • Cultural nights or international themes
  • Storytelling
  • Building simple machines
  • Electronics and coding basics
  • Star gazing and astronomy
  • Nature scavenger hunts
  • First aid training
  • Making new friends and experiencing new challenges
  • Scout-led planning and execution for new adventures
  • Community events and work on community service projects eg volunteering for local events, environmental clean ups, helping at community gardens, fundraising for charity or visiting aged care facilities
  • Skill-building and leadership through taking on new roles in their patrols by planing meetings, and leading activities
  • Advancement ceremonies, for youth progressing to the next Unit and where hard-earned badges are proudly awarded.

Some Scouts venture even further, going on high-adventure treks with their Adventurous Journey's: canoeing in rivers, cycling, or backpacking through the bush.

With a program that is created by the youth for the youth, there is no end to the activities that Scouts can do. The list really is endless.

Events are also organised by Scouts Australia or Scouts Queensland throughout the year and generally occur during school holidays.  This could be a National Jamboree that occurs every 3 years or Scouts Qld run events such as a Cuboree every 2 years or LEAP which runs annually.

There is always something happening in Scouts.
